The Pull of a Tide

I’ve always been fascinated by the ocean.

Since I was a toddler, Pa and Ma would take us to the beach. We’d spend hours looking for things in the sand – pretty shells, curious stones, and the odd hermit crab if we were lucky.

I was partial to low tide; that was when there was the most to discover.

My best memories were of our family getaways to Sentosa. We’d always stay just minutes from the beach, and I’d relish our morning walks while the tide was low, watching all sorts of little critters scurry across the wet sand.

I remember how Ma would chide me each time I got too excited chasing an unsuspecting crab back into its burrow, or how Pa would call out too me from the shore if he thought I’d waded out too far.

Overtime, while these outings got rarer, the ocean became somewhat of a comfort to me – the thrill of a rock pool; the steady draw of a tide; the vibrance of a reef. It began to feel familiar to me; almost familial.

THE PULL OF A TIDE is a family portrait in flowers. These arrangements are an ode to those sultry afternoons spent with my toes in the sand, next to people that matter the world to me.

To speak plainly, my relationship with my family hasn’t always been perfect. But like the pull of a tide, I always find myself drawn back to where I feel the most at home.
